The Indian Revenue Service IRS, is the revenue service of the Government of India. It is one of the Central Civil Services (Group A). The Service functions under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance and is concerned with the collection and administration of the various direct and indirect taxes accruing to the Union Government.

IRS comprises two branches - IRS (Customs and Central Excise) and IRS (Income Tax), which are controlled by two separate statutory bodies, viz., Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) respectively.

How to Apply for Indian Revenue Service IRS

There are two streams of recruitment to the Indian Revenue Service - Direct Recruits and Promoted Officers. Direct Recruits are selected from the Civil Services Examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission and based on preferences opted by them. Promoted Officers are promoted gradually over several years of service. The current ratio of two streams is kept at 1:1. Initial posting would be Assistant Commissioners up to senior rank of Chief Commissioners, Member/Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes or Central Board of Excise and Customs.

Cadre size: 2311 (Customs & Central Excise), 2500 (IT) posts (direct recruitment – 50%, promotion - 50%. Lateral entry – if any).

Training

  • 3 month foundation course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration
  • 15 Month professional training at National Institute of Financial Management at Faridabad for officers of Customs and Excise
  • 15 Month professional training at National Institute of Financial Management at Faridabad for officers of Customs and Excise

During the period of probation an officer will undergo training at Lal Bhadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie and National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagapur. At the end of the training at Mussoorie, he/she will have to pass the end of course test. In addition departmental will also have to be passed during the period of probation. On completion of one year of service his/her pay will be raised to Rs.8275. On Passing the single departmental examination, the pay will be raised to Rs. 8550. The pay beyond the stage of Rs. 8550 will not be allowed unless he/she is confirmed and has completed 3 years of service subject to such other condition as may be found necessary.

In case he / she does not pass the end of course test at the academy the first increment will be postponed by one year from the date on which he/she would have drawn it or up to the date on which under the departmental regulations, the second increment accures, which ever is earlier.

1) The seniority amongst direct recruits, inter-se-shall be determined on the basis of performance in the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission., in the foundational course and in the professional training conducted in the National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur and the weightage to be given in such performances would be indicated in the parenthesis – Civil Services Examination ( 76.67%), Foundational Course ( 8.33%) and Professional Training (15%)

Note – It should clearly understood by the probationer that their appointment weould be subject to any change in the constitution of Indian Revenue Service Group A which the Government of India may think proper to make from time to time and that they would have no claim for compensation in consequences of any such changes.
