The candidates are grouped into 4 categories Humanities, Science, Medical Science, Engineering in the case
of degree holders. For Higher categories, M.Phil and Ph.D is added for analysis.
The following Table gives Success Rate vis-à-vis Broad Stream of Disciplines –
Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2010.
Humanities subjects include languages, history, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Anthropology , Geography, Political Science, Economics. In other words all of the subjects, which usually are considered a BA degree
Science Subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.. In other words all of the subjects, which usually are considered a BSc. degree
Engineering include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering , Electronics Engineering etc. In other words all of the subjects, which usually are considered a BE or B.tech degree
As per the 2010 Civil Service Examination Details provided by the UPSC,
The success rate of candidates having higher degrees was lower than that of those
with bachelor degrees. i.e.
